Your business stationery is always working for you - or against you! Your letterhead, compliments slips, invoices and stationery generally are in constant sight with someone every single day whether it is a government office, a competitor, an existing client, a prospect, member of the press or media or the public at large. More than this, stationery is long lived and can be pulled out and looked years down the line.

What your business stationery says about you is absolutely vital. Of all of the items in your stationery kit, the most important are your business cards because they are going to be the front line troops for your business identity, handed out and passed around in volumes by sales staff, executives, administrators and not forgetting the CEO! Your business card will say a lot about you and not just the information you have printed o upon it, so it pays to invest some time and energy in getting your business card design just right.

You can look at the same boring corporate design business card if you like but try some of these suggestions and see what you take away from them.

Make Your Card Look Like Something it Isn’t

Try a card that has all of your information and contact details on it but turn the card into something else such as a cinema ticket, grocery coupon or luggage tag. This makes them stand out because they are looking like something they are not but they perform exactly the same function and as many business cards are never going to become a talking point at the water cooler, these certainly will.

Use Vibrant Color Images

If you have a drawer full of white, plain looking cards you are going to have a very hard time standing out from the crowd if your business card is also a plain, white card - here’s an opportunity to stand out by using a vibrant color set and better, a really good image that dominates the card such as a tropical sea blue or foliage green as backdrops to the card itself.

Don’t Use Paper

There are other materials you can use instead of simply card stock; the issue becomes the cost involved when you are using non-standard materials however, these really do stand out from the crowd and are likely to be kept forever instead of being lost in an office desk drawer.

Embossed metal really makes a statement and you can combine the metal card with something functional such as a letter opener - it is still the same dimensions as a business card but clearly something different. Perspex also makes a good business card with a clear, see through “card” and your contact information embossed or printed over it.

Opt for an Alternative Shape

You don’t have to be square with your business cards; you can opt for different shapes for your business cards as they are primarily used to provide a permanent aide memoire for your business information. You can use circular or odd outline shaped cards but remember they must be able to be kept in a wallet easily enough - there is no point in making a statement that becomes simply inconvenient.

A few years back, I used to give a talk at Search Engine Strategies about partnering with ad agencies and why it may be a great channel for SEM agencies. Over the years, Search Mojo has worked with several different partners, and one of the discussions that often arises is the desire by some agencies to have Search Mojo “white label” our services.

White labeling, in the ad agency world, involves the a vendor or consultant appearing as the ad agency’s representatives, as if the vendor has put a “white label” over his own brand. In the past, white labeling was a fantastic way for an ad agency to appear to have a wider offering and more employees through the use of vendors. Agencies were able to offer a wider breadth of services while still appearing to be one cohesive company.

However, the dawn of transparency may bring the end of the white label approach.

Challenge 1: Search Engines
It began with the search engines and personal branding. As consultants and industry experts build their personal brands over time, through blogging, articles, or public speaking, they are more likely to have more content in the search engines either that they have themselves written or has been written about them. Take Rand Fishkin at SEOmoz for example. Rand has a fairly unique name - likely more unique than Danny Sullivan even outside of the SEO world. A search for “Rand Fishkin” in Google yields 65,900 results and readily displays Rand as an SEO expert and CEO of SEOmoz. If Rand were being white labeled under an agency, one quick Google search would expose that he actually runs an SEO company that is not part of a larger ad agency.

Challenge 2: Social Networking
Then came the advent of social networking. As sites like LinkedIn and Facebook grow in popularity and usage, the more common it is for business colleagues to freely connect. All businesses want to build their brand identity, and Facebook and LinkedIn are just two more tools to accomplish that goal.

But what happens when an SEM firm is white labeled under an ad agency? There’s no way to hide your profile from certain searchers - nor should you be asked to. This scenario actually happened to me a few years back when a client, through no prompting from me, searched my name on LinkedIn and found out my actual background wasn’t part of the larger ad agency.

Challenge 3: Twitter
And now Twitter makes it even more difficult to white label. Twitter simply extends a personal brand even further as subject matter experts post news, blog post announcements, and more.

The Answer: Transparency
So what can ad agencies do to combat these challenges to white labeling? Shift thinking and embrace transparency. Stop worrying so much. Ad agencies fear that clients will not want to work with various vendors, even if they are unified under a single point of contact or account manager. But I’ve seen a shift happening in marketing of late. Clients have tried the “one big agency” approach, and many have found that one big agency to do all types of marketing isn’t always the best answer for them. They readily embrace a combination of “best in breed” organizations who come together to achieve top results.

A great analogy I heard from a colleague the other day compared the “best in breed” approach to a accomplished runner in a triathlon. If a runner participates in a triathlon, you would expect the runner to do well in the running portion of the triathlon. But will the runner do just as good of a job in the swimming and biking portions as an accomplished swimmer or cyclist might?

The same holds true for agency partnering. Bring the best in breed partners together. Instead of trying to accomplish the entire triathlon yourself, use the relay approach, where the strongest runner does the running, the strongest swimmer does the swimming and the strongest cyclist does the biking. It makes for an overall stronger team with better results in the end.

Establishing and developing your company brand and image is a process which takes a great deal of time, energy and money - it is only very high spending, big corporate and government entities who can afford to establish a brand identity overnight with millions in a PR budget. Smaller companies must use every opportunity to promote themselves and your company stationery is an ideal, hard working sales representative for you 24/7!

Just think about your stationery - everyone will get to see it at some point; customers, employees, suppliers and professional service providers, the government, competitors and the public at large - what they see will say a lot about you as a business and how well you operate.

Sloppy or boring stationery will paint a picture of “we don’t care” or “we have no imagination or initiative”; neither view is likely to favorably incline viewers and readers to want to engage with you to resolve their own needs and demands for your product or service. The stationery must be present a professional appearance and be printed to the highest quality standards and on good quality paper you can afford.

Consider your stationery portfolio - a small to medium sized business will as a minimum require the following:

- Letterhead;
- Continuation sheets for letterhead;
- Business cards;
- Compliments slips; and
- Invoices.

All of these items should have the same information on them - your company name and brand logo, a website and sales number - though how you will include other information will vary depending on what the stationery will be used for. Invoices will contain your name and logo but probably have details of your accounts receivables office and details of any special terms for future orders. Your business cards are particularly important as they are used so widely to introduce your business - they must make an impression so they are not discarded or hard to find in a desk drawer full of other same old, boring designed cards.

The key with using your stationery as part of your brand identity development is to establish a uniformity of message across the different items of stationery you are using and just as importantly across other media such as television and media advertising. Your logo and tag line should be the same throughout so people become accustomed to it and know automatically who they are dealing with when they see it.

Image is everything in this regard and you usually only get one shot at impressing someone with first impressions; your stationery is usually the very first thing a new prospect is likely to see whether it be a marketing mail shot, a referral using your business card from another customer or a marketing flyer with a quick message on how to get a discount that week. You must invest thought and energy in getting the design right and ensuring you adopt an homogeneous approach to promoting your brand - paying a little extra to have better looking paper can make the difference between signing a deal or having your company consigned to the trash basket as soon as a prospect sees the stationery.

Everyone must have heard about the potential of earning big money through Internet/online business. There are so many advertisements going on all over the Internet and so many companies are offering the same potential for extra revenue at almost no cost at all. But how does it work and what are the basic things that one needs to know? How did it all start and why is it so popular?

Before getting yourself involved with this business, perhaps it is safe to say that you should get an idea how it started and then move on to the basic things that you need to know before starting up in this business. This way, you will be equipped with the proper knowledge before venturing out into the online world of business.

Before, affiliate marketing was only used in the adult entertainment industry. The basic concept here is to make a website visible in other websites as well. This is a form of advertising but the weird thing is that you advertise in websites that sell the same product as yours. The essential process is that affiliate merchants will give someone a picture or a banner of their company and this will contain a link back to their website.

The affiliate simply has to make this banner visible in his website. If a customer clicks on this link and makes a purchase, the affiliate will earn commission based on the amount bought. Unlike other forms of advertising in which merchants pay for website space without any assurance that people actually see their ads, this is one sure way of ensuring that the advertisements actually made revenue. Now that you know how it works, let us proceed to learning the essential things of Internet/online business.

You should understand search engine optimization. This will play a major role I driving business to your websites if you will be an affiliate of merchants. Let us say that you want to sell shoes but you do not want the clutter of having to stock up, do the inventory, and so on. All you need to do is to place merchant websites in your own website and if the customers make a purchase, let the merchants do the job and all you need to do is to take your commissions. But then it does not end there.

The big question is, how will you make sure people all over the world can see your website? If they type shoes in the search box of search engines, will they see your website? How will they buy from you if they do not know you exist? You should study and maximize the potential of SEO so you can be sure that your website is one of the many that will pop on the first page of search engines.

You must know that Internet/online business is about presence and the only way you can do this is by putting fresh web content on your website. Without fresh content, the spiders that crawl the Internet will not be able to segregate your website as something unique of its own kind.

Do you want to learn how I build a list and make money online? I’ve just finished writing a brand new ebook called ‘7 Steps to Profits and List Building with Article Marketing’.

Management consultancy is the process of buying outside expertise in order to improve an existing business set-up. The highly skilled personnel of such companies look at any aspect of a business that might need improving, and suggests remedies. Despite the first management consultancy firm coming into existence in 1886, this sector did not really take off until after World War Two, where a number of now big name consultancies were founded.

In its early development, the idea of bringing in a management consultancy to a business was much more popular than in the USA than in Europe. This may be because while Americans saw this as an effective way to bring expertise to parts of their business which might need attention, the European management model considered people in charge as individuals who knew what they were doing already, and did not require external input. One of the reasons for this, it has been suggested, is that European managers were educated to a significantly higher level to their American counterparts.

Over the years though, the use of management consultancy services in European businesses has become much more popular. This change really began after the war when international trade, led by the USA, increased dramatically.

One modern slant on the management consultancy is Internal Corporate Consulting groups, which as the name suggests provide consultancy services from inside the company. There are several advantages and disadvantages to these teams.

A management consultancy can be effective when the process is implemented in accordance with the current strategy of the business. It also usually means there is significantly less time for the team to get to grips with the business, as they will already be familiar with it. Another good point is that the risk of sensitive information being passed to outside organisations is reduced. One of the main reasons why such internal teams have developed though, is reduced cost.

Disadvantages of employing an internal team include the fact that they might not have a totally objective viewpoint - one of the big plusses of hiring an outside consultancy. A more cloistered internal group might not be fully aware of the current best practices, which an experienced team, who has dealt with various business models, might. It is considered problematic to judge whether an internal consultancy team is actually cost effective - particularly as they are on the books all the time. In harder economic times they can be one of the first teams to be cut.

Governments too, have increased their use of management consultancy services over the years. The UK Government has increased spending greatly since taking over from the Conservatives in 1997. This is largely due to significant increases in National Health Service spending.

There has also been some criticism of management consultancy firms, with various charges being levelled against them. ‘Stating the obvious’ is one, while providing ‘pre-packaged’ solutions for businesses, thereby failing to address the actual dilemma faced by the company. Overuse of buzzwords is another issue, blinding clients with fancy sounding terms which simply confuse the situation.

Overall though, it is undeniable that management consultancy firms have gained prominence and their continued use suggest that they have a significantly beneficial effect on companies’ fortunes.

Anna Stenning is an expert on good management consultancy having trained with consultants before.

It occurred to me once, whilst wandering the busy streets of Central London, that the thousands of visiting Japanese, French, Italians, Americans - and every other race on earth - don’t have access to fish and chips. It was just a silly thought initially, but after doing a little business research I realised that there were indeed no major fish and chip shops in the heart of the capital. So I decided to look into it a little further - and my business research led me to the conclusion that it was a great business idea.

I conducted several surveys among tourists who were milling around the British capital’s famous sites, as part of my business research. At Big Ben they wanted fish and chips. At Trafalgar Square they wanted them too. Chinese waiting for the guards to change - they wanted fish and chips. Hungry Americans leaving Madame Tussauds, they definitely wanted fish and chips. Even fussy French turning their noses up at Buckingham Palace - they were game for a little traditional fish and chips - or English Roulette, as they called it.

The whole bearskin watching, camera wielding, Big Ben pointing, Soho wandering lot of them wanted fish and chips. My business research was sound. England may not be renowned for its food exports, but thousands of adventurous tourists were willing to give it a go. Another story for the folks back home - ‘Is English food as bad as they say it is?’ friends or relatives might ask, ‘Well, I had fish and chips in central London, and this is what happened…’

As my business research proved to be so good, I took a business plan to the bank. The sceptical branch manager nodded politely as I told him that central London was crying out for this main stay of British cuisine. His interest was at last fired when I showed him the evidence supplied by peckish Poles, hungry Hungarians, salivating Serbians and starving Scots.

To my astonishment, the bank manager was most enthusiastic by the end of our meeting. He said my business research was top notch and was willing to go ahead with a loan.

12 months on, and I’m happy to say that all that my business research came to fruition. Now I have a very busy central London take away and restaurant - selling steaming hot chips and mouth watering battered fish. Despite the recession, tourists around London are still willing to spend - especially in order to sample the nation’s classic dish.

Perhaps they don’t all love it - especially the French - but I would say the majority do. As my business research proved, it’s very much a ‘when in Rome’ sort of experience. But, at the end of the day, most nations have some form of fried potato snack.

The endless London pizzerias, Chinese and Indian restaurants, were suffering dwindling customers. Where did they all go? To my traditional fish and chip shop, of course! It just goes to show the importance of business research - and not making a single move until you know there is a market for what you want to sell.

Computers crimes are everywhere these days, there are entire divisions of law enforcement teams devoted to working on crimes that, in one way or another are linked to the use of a computer.

The root of many of the crimes perpetrated through the use of a computer stem from the fact that the highly sensitive information present on many personal and business computers isn’t disposed of properly. You may not realize it, because it may not really seem like a big deal at the time, but you have tons of highly sensitive information stored on your personal hard drive - and if you operate a business you may have many other people’s (your customers) highly sensitive information on there as well.

You could have: full names, social security numbers, complete addresses, accounts numbers (including bank and credit card). If you are getting rid of an old hard drive, even though you think you may have gone through every step to properly ensure that this sensitive information has been erased, it could still be present for anyone with even basic knowledge of computers to bring back and have full view of. Even if you have a good deal of computer knowledge and you make every effort to wipe a hard drive clean, there is no guarantee that an experienced computer programmer or hacker couldn’t easily resurrect the sensitive information and do whatever they wanted with it.

Whether it’s a business or personal computer, if the sensitive information that is present on the hard drive gets into the wrong hands it could be incredibly damaging to the computer owner. PC’s that are “breached” once disposed of can very easily lead to a nasty case of identity theft that is very hard to track - the offender may literally have access to every single bit of personal identity they need to effectively steal the former PC owners identity. For those of you who’ve never been a victim of identity theft, rest assured it’s not a very pleasant experience and can affect your credit for a very long time as the investigation is held and the details sorted out.

For business computers the scenario can be equally as bad, a business customer’s private information can be made public. This can be damaging to the business’ customers by having their sensitive information go out to the public and it can cause a wide rift created by distrust towards the company who let the information get out. One situation like this that isn’t swiftly and efficiently handled can spell almost instant doom for a business.

It you don’t want the potential disaster of highly sensitive information getting into the wrong hands, then it’s imperative that the information be completely wiped away from the hard drive. The only one way to one guarantee that the information is completely destroyed is to use a hard disk crusher.

For a home PC, there are services available that you can enlist that will use the hard disk crusher on your system to remove all of the sensitive data before you dispose of the hard drive, or you can rent one from a service and perform the job yourself. For businesses who will be getting entirely new office equipment and have a multitude of machines that need to be “crushed”, there are companies that lease or sell hard drive crushers that you will then have access to forever, or as long as you may need it.

If things continue to go the way they are going, it may not be long before crimes stemming from information found on computer hard drives comprise the bulk of the crimes committed in the US. Don’t let yourself fall prey to this type of situation, before you dispose of any hard drive - use a hard disk crusher to clean all of the sensitive information off of it.

The boom in the buy to let market over recent years has seen a great deal of new landlords enter the area. Insurance is naturally a priority for all of us - but particularly so for those going into business. And the nature of a buy to let property means it is prudent to consider the benefits of specific buy to let insurance.

For those entering the buy to let market, it can be a daunting experience. A multitude of things need to be considered in order that a property is run well - from organising Council Tax (which may not be payable if all tenants are in full time education) to ensuring direct debits for water, gas, electricity are all set up.

But of course there are great rewards for successfully rented properties, with happy, careful tenants who pay on time and cause few or no problems. This responsibility to tenants and taking care of the bricks and mortar of the building can be somewhat eased by the choice of suitable insurance cover.

Buy to let insurance might be considered just another gimmick from the insurance industry, but a closer look reveals a number of differences tailored to the buy to let landlord’s needs. One notable difference between buy to let insurance and household cover is the amount of time a property can be left unoccupied - for normal household insurance it is 30 days, while a more specialised policy might provide 60 or perhaps 90 days cover.

It is important to remember when applying for your buy to let insurance you’ll be asked for the rebuild cost of your home. This is not the market value of your property, but the estimated cost of rebuilding it from scratch. In most cases, for modern properties, the rebuild cost will be significantly lower then the market value. For older properties however, achieving a similar effect could quite possibly cost significantly more.

When selecting your buy to let insurance, you may also wish to consider some sort of home emergency cover - some policies have this as standard. It is worth noting however that this is only for emergencies and not for general maintenance issues. Your buy to let insurance provider will also request that your property’s wiring is checked over if it was built before 1970. There are also likely to insist on an annual gas appliance check.

It is worth taking heed of the fact that many insurers will not provide buy to let insurance to properties inhabited by high risk tenants. Controversial perhaps, but people such as students, those claiming state benefits, or sharing groups may be refused cover.

It is also advisable, when selecting cover, to choose a policy which protects fixtures and fittings - as most buy to let homes in the United Kingdom are let unfurnished or part-furnished.

The various other risks associated with renting a property are best dealt with by specialist buy to let insurance cover. There are certainly a range of other things to take into account, which would not normally figure in obtaining standard household insurance.

If you love cigars–if you’re a true cigar aficionado–you probably wonder, every now and again, what life is like for the hard-working folks who grow the tobacco for your favorite cigars.

Well, if it’s premium cigars you like to smoke–perhaps by the box, perhaps one by one in a premium cigar sampler–then the first thing to know is that your cigar is made by people from all over the world. In many premium cigars, the wrapper (outer portion) of the cigar will come from one region, the binder (inner leaves which help hold the cigar together and add something to the flavor) from another, and the filler (from which much of the flavor comes) from another.

Why all this international complication? Well, there are three things to remember about the tobacco plant: as plants go, it’s lazy, wimpy, and picky.

Picky. Some organisms have evolved in order to maintain survival at all costs (locusts and Circus Peanuts come to mind), but that’s not tobacco. This plant thrives in a very particular set of conditions. In fact, those conditions are essentially the ones that you’ll experience if you stick a finger in your humidor–a high level of humidity (sixty-seven to seventy-four percent relative humidity) but a low level of actual wetness; mild warm temperatures (sixty-nine to seventy-three degrees); sunlight, but not too much of it. Tobacco has evolved to prefer soil that is wet, and yet it doesn’t want to be rained on. Talk about impossible to please! That’s why the world’s best filler, according to common opinion, comes from Cuba’s Vuelta Abajo valley region. Here, the soil is rained on extensively most months out of the year, but conditions are dry during the growing season: the soil stays wet without the plant getting battered in a storm. Perfect!

You don’t find conditions like these everywhere–in fact, it’d be tough to find them anywhere in the United States, which is why we’re not known as producers of filler tobacco. Nicaragua, Brazil, Honduras, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and a number of other countries are also ace filler-tobacco producers. For the more leathery, sturdier leaves that make the best wrappers, though, the United States offers a handful of ideal locations. The East Coast in the summer, for example, with a level of rain that hurts filler tobacco (though some is produced there) but is just fine for wrappers, produces some of the finest wrappers in the world.

Filler produced in less-than-ideal conditions commands a lower price on the world market, which makes it a less efficient cash crop for farmers. Why not grow wrapper tobacco and make more money, since the United States offers ample conditions for the production of world-beating wrappers?

Lazy. When you plant tobacco seeds, you don’t actually plant them in the traditional sense of the word–you sprinkle them on the ground, let them lie on the surface, and they take root of themselves. (Some planters will swish them in a pail of water and dump the water willy-nilly on the ground.) Tobacco seeds don’t like having to fight up from underneath the ground.

Obviously, this strange trait also means that tobacco seeds can’t be planted just anywhere. Places that are prone to frost until late in the year are insalubrious locations for tobacco farming. Anything that disturbs the area close to the soil’s surface is going to have negative implications for the survival of tobacco seedlings.

Wimpy. The same plant that doesn’t like fighting up from underneath the ground is also afraid of overdrying, overwatering, too much sunlight, too little sunlight, mold, and nearly every other problem that can bedevil a plant. Think of Connecticut Shade tobacco, the kind grown mostly on the East Coast and often used as a wrapper. They call it Connecticut Shade because it is literally grown under the shade of huge nylon tents which makes this crop’s life as undisturbed and pampered as possible.

CigarFox provides you the opportunity to build your own sampler of the finest cigars that include cigar brands like Montecristo, Romeo & Julieta, H Upmann, Macanudo, Cohiba, Partagas, Gurkha and many more. Choose from more than 1200 different cigars! Other cigar products include cigar humidors, cigar boxes, and cigar accessories like Zippo Lighters.
