Setting Up And Running Your Small Business Practice

February 11th, 2009

While setting up and running your own small business practice can have many rewards, it can also be fraught with many risks. In order to minimize these risks, it is a good idea to devise a plan before committing yourself.

Think of ideas

What kind of business do you want to start? Thinking of business ideas is an inherent part of starting a business. For example, you need to think of a business that you find interesting, which will therefore motivate you further. Or, you could check out the business ideas others have thought of, and adapt one you find interesting, making it different from other businesses.

Some of the most valuable skills involved in setting up and running a business is being able to disperse the risk, extend the span of life of a product or service, promote growth, and adjust to an evolving marketplace.

Make a business plan

In fact, before breaking away from your current employment, you will require a number of different plans such as a business plan, a plan for relocation, a plan for acquiring the resources and training you will require. However, your business plan will be the core of the matter. Setting up a business without a plan is akin to driving through an unknown country without a map. Without a business plan, you will have no idea where you are heading for and whether the path you have taken is the right one.

Business plans focus on various essential areas like: what your business is about, what or who your market is, how you will go about getting the funding, what the sources and projections of your income will be, where you will be located and why, and how you will go about marketing your product or services.

Get a handle on the logistics

Select the location of your office carefully. If you are going to have foot traffic, ensure that you have free and adequate parking. Make sure that the location you choose has provisions for the telecommunications that you will require such as multiple telephone lines, high speed internet, cellular connectivity, and so on. A good short-term solution would be a home office or an executive suite.

Once you finalize the location of your office, you will need to furnish it. Find resellers of discount furniture. New furniture is just too expensive. Expensive equipment like computers and copiers can be leased.

Hire competent advisors. If you do not have a tax advisor or a business attorney, this is the time to begin looking for them.

Decide on the form of your business, whether you want it to be a corporation, a sole proprietorship, an LLC, etc. This is where you will require the expertise of an attorney and accountant. Have the attorney draw up all the paperwork of the business, and get a tax professional to deal with your taxes, filings and books.

Devise a marketing plan

Without a market, you will have no business. Product, promotion, price and place are the main elements of marketing. Does your business idea have a market? Have you identified your customers, and what their numbers are? Will your product or service be able to attract more customers down the line? Have you determined who your competitors are, and why people should opt for your product or service instead of theirs?

While your financiers will certainly want proof of the markets existence, in order to find out for yourself whether your business idea is a viable one, you will have to conduct market research and even have the framework of an order book.

Ascertain your financial viability

Find out if your business idea is feasible financially. Many good business ideas simply remain that good ideas. They just dont take off as viable businesses. You can only determine whether your idea is financially feasible by making a plan. Your financiers will require a financial plan, but even if you do not require any financial backing, you need to check to see that your business idea is not a waste of time and money.

And lastly; if you are planning to get into the business with an acquaintance or friend, it is vitally important to get your lawyer to draw up a partnership. The days of Gentlemens Agreements are long gone.

February 11th, 2009

Franchising can be a great option for attempting a tried and successful business plan and running your own business, based on that model. There are certain rules that should be followed and fees that need to be paid for it, but in the future if you are buying a franchise, which is established then it can prove to be a very profitable business for you. However, you require a good amount of money to buy a franchise and this results in limitations for people who are really able to buy a franchise in the first place. But when it comes to franchising opportunities in small businesses, there are no requirements of huge investments due to which it becomes possible for many people to get in a franchise without putting in a lot of money.

If you are planning to buy a small business franchise then listed below are some of the franchises available:

Tax back franchise:

Recovery of tax is the most important part of this small business opportunity. You get seven different ways of making money through the provision of a free service that can tempt a lot of people. The cost for starting up is approximately $8,995 to $12.495. There is no need for any specific amount of liquidity. With this small business opportunity you can also receive support and training.

At Work Personnel Services Franchise:

The focus in the At Work Personnel Services franchise is to provide staffing and various other essential resources to business owners. The franchiser sets no limitations and because of this, the franchisee gets better control over the business. The approximate capital investment in At Work Personnel Services Franchise is $59,500 to $105,000, with $50,000 as liquidity. This franchise offers support and training, but not financing.

Contours Express Fitness Franchise:

With the boom in healthcare market you can have a good chance of being successful as a franchisee. This is a business opportunity that takes optimum advantage of the increase of interest in the healthcare sector and benefits from it. The capital investment in Contours Express Fitness Franchise is from $55,720 to $95,420. You can get financing, training and support in this franchise.

Besides these options there are various other opportunities in franchising as well. You need to do a proper research in order to find out which opportunity suits you the best. When you are looking out for a small business franchise, you need to take your interests and skills into account. The skills and interests should be in combination with the amount you are planning to invest, the liquidity and whether you will need financing or not and what control level you will be having on the business. Once you are familiar with the your personal desires and capabilities that are needed for running a franchise you can easily understand and look out for a franchise that will suit you. There is no point in delaying the process of identifying good small business franchise opportunity because there are chances that you will miss an opportunity that is perfect for you.

Ways To Help You Plan Your Home Office For Productivity, And Comfort

February 11th, 2009

There are quite a few home offices that are set up in special areas within the home. However, majority people require a separate room for client meetings and bear dual responsibility of balancing home and office. Paying attention to the different things that are required by your home office is very important, so that you can work effectively. You need to look for the most resourceful pieces of equipment your funds can buy.

Make up your mind: You must make sure of the equipment the home business needs. Ask yourself if you intend to make use of the room simply to pay the household bills and perhaps maintain some records, or whether you intend to set up a successful business and manage all your routine work from that room. Make a list of everything you would require to carry all the business functions from your office.

Build up a floor diagram: As soon as you have completed penning down your list of all the things you would require, create a floor diagram. In your floor diagram depict the different spaces reserved for particular equipment.

Do not approximate the calculations: You can make use of a measuring tape and measure each and every thing so that you will know how to save space. You can refer to the floor diagram and use tiny pieces of masking tape to mark the space allotted to each of the furniture and equipment. Later, check if everything fits appropriately and whether there is space constraint.

Do not overlook the connection aspect: Make sure that all the electrical connections are in close proximity to the work station. Also keep an eye on the phone jacks and ensure that they are not covered at the rear of the filing cupboards. Evaluate the floor diagram, the real outline of the area and the spots where the electrical openings, phone jackets and windows are and modify the diagram as per the actual dimensions. This is also the apt time to have some more openings roped in or you could even include another connection for a phone line.

Utilizing the office space: Ask yourself a number of questions like:

. Who would be making use of this office?
. Would this room be shared with your children?
. Would your partner be sharing your office?

If you can answer these questions mentioned above, it could assist you in making up your mind on the kind of furniture you would purchase. Think about strong and practical furniture if the children are to access it or create a comfort zone if you and your partner are to make use of the space.

The appropriate type of home office furniture: These days a lot of the ready home office furniture is planned to store your computer and additional electronic equipment. You must measure the computer hardware, as you have to be certain if the equipment would fit appropriately into the unit. Be cautious and ensure that your CPU tower as well as your printer fits properly in the places you have set aside in the unit.

An area for storing miscellaneous items: Along with the actual CPU printers etc you must also take care while storing miscellaneous items like envelopes, paper for the printer, light bulbs etc.

Twelve Creative Ideas for Using Teleseminars to Grow Your Business

February 11th, 2009

Conducting teleseminars, or group learning conference calls, is a very effective strategy to promote your small business or professional practice and create additional streams of income. Teleseminars offer a very versatile and efficient way to deliver your services and build your business.

I have been leading teleseminars for many years as part of my service offerings in my coaching business. I use them to attract new prospects, collaborate with colleagues and partners, and increase my income.

And the good news is that teleseminars are very easy to set up and record once you know how and the profit margins are extremely high.

Here are some ideas to jumpstart your creative thinking for delivering your own seminars over the phone:

1. Giving free teleseminars is a great way to promote your business and let new prospects get to know you. Teleseminars are a great marketing vehicle that helps you attract more clients, build your list, and increase sales.

2. Teleseminars are an excellent way to collaborate and do joint ventures with other people who already have a list in order to gain exposure to new prospects and grow your list.

3. If you’re just starting out, you can do interviews with top experts in your niche. Record these interviews and provide them as a bonus in exchange for signing up for your newsletter, or package them as a product.

4. Position yourself as the expert in your field by delivering great content in your specialty area. Teach what you know and love while increasing your visibility and gaining valuable exposure and credibility. This reinforces your brand and gives people a low cost way to get to know you.

5. Attract participants and fill your teleseminars by finding partners to help you with the promotion. Collaborating with partners to offer learning by phone is a very effective and inexpensive way to get more newsletter subscribers and build your list.

6. Have your teleseminars transcribed and offer your clients the opportunity to order a transcript of the call. This can really increase your profits with minimal additional expense for you. You can also add additional sales and marketing materials to the transcript to provide you with opportunities for additional income and exposure.

7. You can make good money from your teleseminars and increase your revenue substantially. Create a program or a series you can charge for, much the same as you would for a workshop series, only this would be over the phone rather than in person, so it saves you travel time and is easier and cheaper to get people to sign up.

8. You can leverage each teleseminar into products and multiple streams of income. Record your teleseminars so you can turn them into an MP3 audio file, a transcript, a CD, a DVD and/or an ebook.

9. Use teleseminars to create an information empire of content - ebooks, workbooks, CD’s, products, and multi-media courses. The same information can be repackaged and reproduced in several different media to generate extra income.

10. Include your affiliate programs and live hyperlinks for any sites you have mentioned during the program that are relevant to your topic. Send an automated email out after the class and includes these links so that you can generate affiliate income.

11. The key to profitable teleseminars is that the ‘fortune’ is in the follow up. You can make ‘upsells’ after people order your teleseminar. For example, you could offer the transcript as an upsell for a minimal extra charge rather than bundling it in the original price. Or, create a backend program to add to your sales funnel and make much more income than from the one teleseminar alone.

12. You can automate the whole process of promotion, registration, sales, and follow up using your website and autoresponders so that you make much more per hour and use your time more effectively.

So, what are you waiting for? Add teleseminars to your marketing mix today, and start gaining more fame, credibility and income.

Easy Home Based Business - Does It Really Exist?

February 11th, 2009

There are all kinds of businesses out there but not one that is an easy home based business. Easy home based business can be misleading. There are a lot of people will tell you that their business is an easy home business. However, they forget to mention that it is easy to sign up for it but not so easy to make money with it. There are ways to find a home business that is easy to start. Let me give you some examples.

First, you can sign up for affiliate programs. This is easy because you will be able to sign up and get a website right away. They will then provide you with the marketing materials that you need to get started.

Second, you can start an online auction store. This is easy to do too. All you need to do is to find the products that you are going to sell. You can do this by signing up with a company to drop ship their product for you or you can find the items yourself and buy them to sell that way. You can also buy wholesale so you get a good deal on products to sell. This is the hardest part. Setting up your own store is the easy part.

These are just two examples of an easy home based business that you can start. However, once you have the home business set up you will come to the hard part of any business. That is the part where you have to market your new business.

This is not so easy because you will have to educate yourself on marketing and it will take some time to market also. You will need to concentrate on one form of advertising at a time. Then when you get that method right you can move onto something else. This is what will take you some time to do. Also you need to remember that you will need to have more than one method of advertising at all times so that you will eventually start seeing the results that you want. It will take you some time to see any results no matter what form of advertising you are using.

A lot of people online have a home business and they will tell you that it is easy to do. However, they don’t always tell you everything up front because they want you to join their business. Before you join any business you want to take the time to check it out thoroughly and ask any questions that you have. Then you can decide if that would be the easy home based business that you want to get started with.

Tips for Wrting Articles

February 11th, 2009

Are you running short of ideas for your articles? Is generating fresh ideas for writing becoming difficult? By following the techniques discussed in this article, you will be an article generating power house.

1. Subscribe to a dozen RSS feeds on various subjects you are most interested in. Scan through the feeds every morning or at night and select a few articles for thorough reading. After reading the articles, tag them using your own classification system.

Classifying articles in different categories helps locate them quickly. Use Google’s RSS reader for reading and tagging the RSS feeds. You will have access to your categorized articles from any computers connected to the Internet.

2. Subscribe to a few print magazines and read them regularly. After you finish reading an article, record the main points of the article in a Google note. You will have access to these notes anywhere in the World.

3. Use a PDA and carry it with you wherever you go. Better yet, get a PDA with a camera and cell phone. You will only carry one gadget for all your communication, organization, and content generation needs.

Take pictures of interesting places, events, and moments you come across in your daily life. Use the voice recorder of the PDA to record whenever an idea hits you. Every night, transfer the ideas from your PDA to Google notes and upload your pictures to flickr.

4. Scan through the comments posted by others on the online articles you read regularly. Record interesting ideas, pros and cons of an issue, and strong opinions posted by others in your Google notes. Leverage the wisdom of the crowd.

5. Have lunch with friends at least once a week. Bounce ideas off them on any topic. Mix ideas from divergent topics to create new ideas in you own subjects.

6. Use the time like driving, watching TV while exercising in a treadmill, etc. to think about your favorite topics and try to relate to things you observe on the road and on the TV. When you get an idea, record it in your PDA.

7. Go through all the ideas and articles you have recorded in Google notes and your RSS reader to create new ideas by giving new twists to the old ideas. Combine two or more ideas and change or improve an existing idea to come up with your own idea.

8. Use a variety of online tools like Technorati, Digg, Delicious, etc. for writing inspiration. Every hour, hundreds of new articles and news stories are posted in these sites. Quickly scan them to hit a few gold nuggets that can serve as springboards for new ideas.

9. Using on-line tools discussed earlier, select an issue and jot down all the pros and cons. Search Google to enhance the idea by adding more pros and cons. Once you have collected a dozen diverse opinions, you will be able to write an article based on those facts in a pro-con format.

10. If you are good at using data for analysis and comfortable in the use of a spreadsheet, draw charts in the spreadsheet and look for patterns in the data. Provide you own interpretation to the data. Illustrate your articles with charts and graphs.

11. To generate topics for your article, use overture keyword selector. Select a single keyword and run it through the overture. You will see a dozen or more keywords based on the search popularity. Copy a few selected keywords to a notepad. Now, take each keyword and do a search in online sites like Digg, Technorati, etc. You will see a number of articles. Read them to generate ideas.

12. Ask yourself what if, what else, and why not questions on an issue and search the Internet to find answers from different sources. Create new ideas generated from existing materials, provide step-by-step guide for somebody to practice an obvious idea, or offer benefits of practicing an old idea.

How to Market Your Service on the Internet When You Wear Many Hats

February 11th, 2009

While catching up on my email, I found this query from an ezine reader:

Q. Cathy, I wear several hats: editing, creative writing, copywriting, and even some consulting. How do I combine these skills into one website? One business? Or do I need more than one of each?

A. This question gets asked often, even by me. Here’s what I would recommend.

(1) Combine your businesses if they serve the same target market. A jewelry designer who also works as a real estate agent probably serves different markets…unless she sells houses to artists and/or gives jewelry as house warming presents. Most likely she will need separate websites.

Sometimes it’s not easy to tell. For instance, you might be a writing coach. You target copywriters and corporate communicators.

But you also write nonfiction articles as a freelancer. And you’re a published novelist.

These hats probably fit together. Many copywriters secretly (or not so secretly) aspire to write novels. Any writing published in mainstream outlets will most likely will add to your credibility. So your clients will love your copywriting site *and* your novel-writing site.

Another example: I still maintain my career consulting site. Copywriting clients often want career ebooks (especially my intuition ebook) and career clients often consider a transition to business, especially Internet businesses.

(2) When in doubt, create separate websites. Or create domain names pointing to your website.

These days it’s so cheap to add domain names and hosting. So when in doubt, I’d experiment with separation. You don’t need a separate website for each domain name. Ask your webmaster about pointing your domain name to a specific page on your site.

But web hosting has become cheap too. For less than ten dollars a month, you can arrange for hosting of multiple domains. One page websites make a lot of sense.

(3) Try to create an umbrella concept –one overarching idea that encompasses all your programs and skills. For example, a writing coach might create an umbrella of writing for profit, creativity through words or writing for purpose.

I’ve experimented with my Bragging101 classes as a way to cover self-promotion in both career and business self-promotion.

(4) Separate right and left brain services.

Recently I was asked to visit a website created for a spiritual type guru. It was a pretty good site…until I noticed a button for “marketing services.” The button led to a page of services for web design, copywriting (!) and strategy.

Logically, of course, it makes sense. A guru could learn Internet marketing to sell his or her own services. But I suspect some clients will expect the web design and copy to have a woo-woo quality.

And I wonder how the guru delivers services. A client says, “I wonder if I have a market for my services.” Will the guru talk about internal blocks or external search engines?

(5) Recognize your own limits of time and energy.

Few people can manage multiple, unrelated businesses (unless they create systems and hire managers, which is another story). So marketing consultants will advise you to specialize as tightly as possible. I would agree.

In the early stages, you may have to experiment. You may need time to decide which specialty will be most profitable. You may find yourself enjoying one “hat” more than another. Or you may be surprised to find that success in one specialty brings clients in another.

Digital Signage: Planning For Predictable Contingencies

February 11th, 2009

I can’t get a simple song I learned so many years ago at Boy Scout camp out of my mind: “Be, be, be prepared, the motto of the Boy Scouts; Be, be, be prepared, the motto of the Scouts….”

Professional communicators responsible for creating content for digital signage networks and private TV channels should take note of that admonition. Being prepared for predictable emergency contingencies could mean the difference between safety, injury or even death.

While some emergency scenarios are unforeseen, many contingencies can be planned for. Fires, floods, severe weather conditions, to name a few, require predictable responses. Consider a fire evacuation plan in a large corporate building, school or medical facility. At this very moment, it’s highly likely that printed signs warning not to take elevators in the event of a fire and displaying simple maps to the nearest stairways hang by those very elevators.

Those maps can serve as the basis for emergency response messaging on a signage system. Since digital signage networks rely on displays positioned in known locations, creating emergency evacuation maps and messages for the sectors occupied by the digital signs is a logical first step. The same approach is appropriate for tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings that advise people, based on their location in proximity to a given display, of where they should take shelter.

A conversation with your company’s safety officer to learn the recommended actions building occupants should take in the event of these sorts of predictable contingencies could help to save lives.

For operators of digital signage networks and private TV channels that make the effort to prepare, contingency playlists stored on a media server can be instructed to interrupt the currently running playlist instantly. It’s even possible in certain situations to network an emergency management computer with a digital signage media server so the correct contingency playlist can be run automatically and unattended. In other words, the fire escape playlist runs if heat or smoke sensors detect a fire and signal the emergency management computer which in turn communicates with the media server, and the playlist with the recommended tornado-safe areas runs if instructed to do so by the correct EAS alert message.

Automatically running a pre-produced emergency message playlist for a given contingency doesn’t preclude adding up-to-the-second advisory information, however. If circumstances allow you to delay your evacuation, or if you work in an area not threatened by the contingency, your media server should allow you to create text crawls to present the latest warning and information without interrupting the contingency playlist. Doing so can make your efforts to communicate vital information in times of emergency all the more valuable to your audience.

I no longer wear a khaki uniform and a neckerchief, but those words reminding every troop member of the Scout Motto ring louder in my ears today than they did all those years ago. There’s no substitute for being prepared to communicate the right message over your digital signage network or private TV channel in the event of predictable emergency contingencies. The time you take today to prepare may turn out to be some of the most important time you spend in your life.
